Annotated Bibliography of Homeopathic Resources
Here are some helpful resources on
homeopathy. The fastest and least expensive sources for these books are
homeopathic book distributors, instead of regular bookstores. A list of
homeopathic book distributors is provided below.
Homeopathic Materia Medicas
Phatak. Materia
Medica of Homoeopathic Medicines. Excellent materia medica with over
400 remedy descriptions. Starts each description with general description
and modalities, then lists specifics by body systems. Descriptions put more
emphasis on observations, which make it extremely helpful for wildlife
rehabilitators. A great and inexpensive resource. Strongly recommended for
wildlife rehabilitators using homeopathic medicines.
Boericke.
Materia Medica with Repertory. A good basic materia medica with over
600 descriptions of homeopathic medicines. Organization within a remedy
makes it very easy to use; starts each remedy with a good basic description
an expands into body systems. Includes etiologies/causations, modalities,
and complementary medicines. While it may look extensive at first, it does
not have the level of detail of some of the materia medicas that are many
volumes or the Concordant. The short repertory at the back is not
particularly helpful for wildlife. Strongly recommended. Costs about $15.
Vermeulen.
Concordant Materia Medica. Excellent compilation of descriptions of
the homeopathic medicines from 11 of the most respected materia medicas.
Extensive descriptions in contemporary language. Has section on
“observations” in each remedy, making it easier to use for rehabilitators
who mainly rely on what they can observe about a wild patient versus
descriptions of type of pain, etc. Recommended after other basic
materia medicas (e.g., Boericke, Phatak) are in the library. Costs about
$150.
Homeopathic Repertories
Kent. Repertory
of the Materia Medica. The classic repertory; also has list
of abbreviations and index. Extensive and inexpensive. However, the “old”
language makes it more difficult to use than the more contemporary
repertories. A “must have”. Recommend purchasing the Indian edition. Note:
if you are bothered by tiny print size, order the large size version for
just a little more cost. Costs about $25.
Schroyens.
Synthesis. This extensive repertory is written in contemporary
language. It is far easier to use than some of the older repertories. The
many cross-references make it easier and faster to find some rubrics.
Excellent resource. Highly recommended. Costs about $195, but sometimes is
available on sale.
Other
Valuable Resources
Yasgur.
Homeopathic Dictionary. This dictionary is a “must have” to be able
to find definitions of many homeopathic terms. While contemporary medical
dictionaries are helpful, they may not
include the ‘old’ terms are sometimes used in homeopathic literature.
Strongly recommend. Costs about $24.
Gray.
Homeopathy: Science or Myth. Overview of the most recent
developments in understanding the science of homeopathy, including the
quantum physics behind potentization. Lists scientific studies demonstrating
the effectiveness of homeopathy. Great resource for those curious about how
homeopathy works as well as those who want to be familiar with research
studies. Costs about $15.
Hamilton.
Homepathic Care for Cats and Dogs. Great explanation of chronic
conditions in pets and ways to prevent or reduce problems through general
husbandry. Excellent book on use of homeopathy with dogs and cats. Costs
about $24.
McCluggage.
Holistic Care for Birds. While this is written more for
caretakers of caged, exotic birds, it is a treasure of information about
care for birds. It has a useful section on homeopathy and first aid, as well
as other holistic treatments, including diet, acupuncture, and herbs.
Helpful resource. Costs about $25.
Morgan.
Homeopathic Medicine: First Aid and Emergency Care. Great book on
trauma care. Many popular homeopathic books just have a very small section
on first aid as it applies to minor problems; this book addresses more
serious trauma conditions and thus is more useful for wildlife
rehabilitators. Costs about $13.
Cummings and Ullman.
Everybody’s Guide to Homeopathic Medicine. Easy to use book about
homeopathy as used to treat “everyday” human health conditions, such as
colds, sore throats, flu, fever. Helpful comparison of remedies with
conditions. Not very relevant for wildlife, but useful for the family. Costs
about $17.
Castro. The
Complete Homeopathy Handbook. Easy to use book for treating common
human conditions, such as fevers, coughs, flu. Helpful introduction to basic
homeopathic principles. Includes very short materia medica with helpful
descriptions of the remedy, general symptoms,
and emotional and physical complaints. Great book for the family. Costs
about $16.
Dooley.
Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine. Short, basic,
friendly explanation of homeopathy. Quick, easy, and credible read to help
people consider this modality. Costs about $10 for the book, or available
for free online at www.beyondflatearth.com.
O’Reilly. The
Organon of the Medical Art. This is Hahnemann’s foundation text of
homeopathy as translated by O’Reilly. It is the in-depth philosophy of
homeopathy and a very challenging read. This is considered the best
translation of the Organon and is for the serious student of classical
homeopathy. Certainly not critical for doing acute care cases for wildlife,
but valuable for those seriously studying classical homeopathy. Costs about
$55.
