Proximate Analysis, Minerals and Calories (click here for Midwest Lab report )

The table below indicates the values for test results from Midwest Labs, plus calculated values for components in a formula mixed at a ratio of 1:2 with water using WildAgain's nutrition calculator. The Kcals are calculated using both the standard Atwater calculation as well as the modified Atwater as prescribed by AAFCO.

Component (dry powder) (Midwest Lab Report) Rehydrated @ 1:2 water

Calculated

Moisture % 4.93 Solids % 16.7
Protein % 44.9 Protein % 7.9
Acid Hydrolysis Fat % 26.0 Fat % 4.6
Carbs (subtraction) % 18.7 Carbs % 3.3
Calcium % .99 Calcium % .2
Phosphorus % 1.2 Phosphorus % .2
Magnesium % .090 Ca/P Ratio .83
Sodium % .44 Kcals/cc (Atwater) .86
Potassium % 1.78 Kcals/cc (AAFCO) .78
Peroxide Value (what's this?) < 2
Ave. dry wt grams (1 TBSP) 6.3
Kcals/gram (Atwater) 4.89
Kcals/gram (AAFCO) 4.44
Cells shaded in light blue indicate values from tests performed by Midwest Labs, Omaha, NE.

Solubility Test (what's this?)

The 21st Century products (puppy and kitten milk replacers) behaved very differently than any of the other powdered milk replacer products, as described below in the notes under each photo.

Figure 1. Flotation observed in all cases, and producing a hard cap of unwetted powder in all cylinders, except for the cylinder on the far right (which emptied out like water, as if none had dissolved). This product behaved very differently than all other powdered milk replacer products. Figure 2. Very different from other products in that hotter water produced more visible residue upon emptying the cylinders.

Physical characteristics

The texture of this product was even and nconsistent. This resulted in measurement error described below. (The expected error shown below is equal to 1 standard deviation (statistically 68% of all measurements should fall within this range)).

Texture

Weight/TBSP and measurement variability

Weight (average) 6.3 grams / TBSP (large end of red scoop).
Texture and handling comments Fine in texture, easy scooping -   evenly and consistently.
Observed measurement variability (what's this?) Scooping error generally within +/- 3.1%.

Low error -6.3%; High error +6.3%.

Scoop or weigh? Scooping will generally provide a consistent volume, but weighing this product will produce a more accurate measurement.
